Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

When this passage is compared in light of 1 Corinthians 2:9, it would seem that the two contradict each other. But, there is no contradiction. 1 Corinthians 2:9 reveals that it is in reference to the "heart of man". The carnal man is not able to comprehend the things of God (John 3:5). It is only by the Holy Spirit that a man is able to comprehend the things of God, for God is spirit and is only revealed to men through His spirit.

Here, Paul is speaking to a group of believers. It is his desire that they be given the Spirit of wisdom, who will open thier eyes and give them the understanding and knowledge of God, which reveals the great and wonderful things that they have been freely given to strengthen and empower them in this current world.

Ephesians 1 teaches that each and every elect person recieves thier own inheritance as a result of the adoption which occurs at regeneration. And it continues, by revealing, that through faith in Christ, each adopted child is promised the gift of the earnest, taken from thier own inheritance. That gift is given in the form of the Holy Spirit, and is the ability to take current possession of eternal life now, in this present world.

This power and strength, that is given to the saints in this present world, enables them to overcome the powers of darkness, subdue the carnal man, become a new creation, and be raised to life and walk in a new and living way.
