John 1:12-13 To them gave he power to become the sons of God

Most of Israel rejected Jesus as the Christ. Others accepted Him as the Christ, but did not believe in Him, while others did. It was to these last two groups that Jesus gave the liberty to become “sons” of God. These are “sons” not by the offering of sacrifice, the inclination of the human nature, or by the choice of moral excellence, but because they have been taught of God through the Holy Spirit.
